Foundations of Piano

Hello, and welcome to the beginning of your journey with piano! Whether you're completely new to music or you're a seasoned musician looking to add piano to your toolbox, this course has been designed for you to learn at your own pace. This means you may skip over the material you already know, or you can go back and review as needed.

In this unit, we'll be covering the first building blocks of technique including finger numbers, and music theory including key names, basic note values, and music terminology.

Practice Tip: Don't over-assign yourself! 4-5 pages at a time is a good pace in the beginning, and you want to aim for at least 15 minutes of practice a day. Every time you play through an exercise or song, you're creating a neural pathway in your brain. It's similar to creating a path in a forest where it becomes clearer and easier to walk each time, but those first few times will include hacking away at branches and clearing away debris. Try to enjoy this process! A successful piano student is one who is patient with themselves, allows themselves to make mistakes, and is eager to keep trying and excited to get it right.
